Having taught first-year students at Royal Holloway for several years, I see the same pattern every September: strong A-Level students who did everything right at school, and still find the first term of a maths degree genuinely disorientating. It isn't that they've gotten worse at maths — the subject itself changes shape. Here's what's actually different, and how to adjust quickly.
1. Maths becomes about proof, not procedure
A-Level trains you to apply a method correctly. A maths degree asks you to justify why the method works, often from first principles, using formal definitions and logical argument. This is a real shift in what "doing maths" means, and it can feel like starting the subject again from scratch even though the algebra is often more elementary than what you did at A-Level. Expect this adjustment, and don't mistake it for a sign you're not capable of the subject.
2. You have far fewer contact hours than you think you need
A typical week might have 10–15 hours of lectures and classes, against 30+ hours a week of school timetable you're used to. The degree is designed around the assumption that most of the learning happens in your own independent study time, working through lecture notes and problem sheets, not in the room with a lecturer. Struggling students are rarely the ones who understood less in lectures — they're usually the ones who didn't convert lecture time into independent study time afterwards.
3. Bridge the gap before term starts, not during it
If you know your course leans heavily on a particular A-Level topic — proof by induction, complex numbers, matrices, or calculus, depending on your course — it's far easier to firm that up over the summer than to relearn it in week 3 while also trying to keep up with new material. Most universities publish a "before you arrive" reading list or refresher pack; treat it as compulsory, not optional.
4. Problem sheets are not homework in the school sense
School homework is usually a check that you can apply what was taught that week. University problem sheets often include questions that go beyond what was covered in lectures, deliberately, to push you into genuine problem-solving. Getting stuck on a problem sheet question is normal and expected — it's part of how the course is designed to work, not a sign you've fallen behind.
5. Use office hours — lecturers expect it
Office hours exist because lecturers expect students to need them; empty office hours are not a good sign for a course, they're a sign students aren't using a resource that's freely available. Come with a specific question ("I don't follow why this step in the proof holds") rather than "I don't understand any of it," since specific questions get much more useful answers in a short slot.
6. Find a small study group early
Explaining a proof to someone else, or hearing someone else's explanation of a step you're stuck on, is often more effective than another hour reading notes alone. The students who adjust fastest tend to form a small, regular study group in the first few weeks — not necessarily their closest friends, just people who show up consistently and are willing to work through problem sheets together.
7. Expect the workload to be uneven across modules
Some modules will click quickly; others will take real, sustained effort for weeks before they make sense. This unevenness is normal and doesn't mean you're worse at the subjects that take longer. Budget your independent study time accordingly rather than splitting it equally across modules by default.
The transition to university maths is genuinely difficult for almost everyone, including students who found A-Level straightforward. The ones who adjust well tend to do so by changing their study habits early — more independent problem-solving, more use of office hours, and treating a stuck problem as normal rather than alarming — rather than by trying to work harder at the same approach that worked at school.
